Television: His Dark Materials - Language and Representation

Camerawork, editing and sound:

-camera angles:high angle shots of Lyra to make  her look vulnerable and innocent  

-Editing:fast pace to cover lots of narrative and creates excitement 

-sound:non-digetic lonely voice audience can hear music and over 


Mise-en-scene:

-settings:different worlds/city in the sky,cave,rain forest,ocean and far off exotic location

-fantasy genre:whiches,super natural(demon animals) revel emotions of characters

His dark malarial is A fantasy with drama as there floating city's,demon animals,witches and magic

  • Lyra Belacqua=main character/protagonist 
  • Mrs. Coulter=helper(helps the protagonists ambitions)

Some binary opposition is that while the protagonist and the helper is in the empty city will parry (the boy) is seen cooking for the women (Lyra) which is subverting stereotype in society.

Representations

1) How are women represented in His Dark Materials? Are gender stereotypes reinforced or subverted? Think about Lyra and Mrs Coulter here.

the women in his dark materials are subverted as they are seen as more in power over men as seen when will cooked for Lyra instead on Lyra cooking for him

2) How are men and masculinity represented in His Dark Materials? Think about Will and Lee Scoresby here.

the masculinity is-int really shown much and we rarely see a high commanding male in any part of the show except lee 

3) How is age (e.g. teenagers; older people) represented in His Dark Materials? Does the show reinforce or challenge stereotypes about young people? Think about Lyra and Will plus the abandoned children they meet. Also think about Mrs Coulter and other adults.

 Most of the main characters in this series and episode are children and they are shown not to need adults or help from older people. The abandoned children of Cittàgazze also demonstrate they can live without adults - which subverts typical stereotypes. Mrs Coulter also shows how stereotypes are subverted as a parent who does not care for her child.

4) How is race and ethnicity represented in His Dark MaterialsAre stereotypes reinforced or subverted?

The actors in His Dark Materials are from a range of ethnic and social class backgrounds and the character of Will subverts stereotypes of race and ethnicity as well as gender. However, some stereotypes are reinforced - the abandoned children in Cittàgazze are presented as working class in a very stereotypical way. 

5) How are politiciansreligion and people with power represented? Think about how the Magisterium are shown in this episode.

The magisterium is seen to be this big military force with all the flying,ground and sea vehicle technology with also a lot of armed personnel with them and are seen as the bad guy's in the show

the first season of this of his dark materials has a bigger succeeds that a city of magpie as his dark materials had 7.2million views but  city of magpie only got 4.4views.
