Uses and Gratifications - Blumler & Katz Audience Effects Theory2
1) Write down a media product for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you:
INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE
Example media product: The Times newspaper.
Why audiences enjoy it: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
Why audiences enjoy it: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY
Example media product: celebrity's.
Why audiences enjoy it: celebrity are a symbol of personal identity as they achieved there goal threw there own identity and is something for others to look up to.
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT
Example media product: movies
Why audiences enjoy it: this is because movies are enjoyed and a source of entertainment.This is because movies are some type of motivation for others and may find it enjoyably.
RELATIONSHIPS
Example media product: soap opera
Why audiences enjoy it: Is because the audience care about long term characters and wanna know the ending.
2) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).
One important element that i noticed is the music of the video and its tone threw out the video as it may be enjoyable for others.Another element that i noticed in the video was the detailed photography that was show to us and might be enjoyable to others.
